The girl with no platelets

Updated: Jun 11, 2021

The girl with no platelets... the medical mystery! 🤪 That's ME! So far I've had 3 hospital stays and 4 relapses (one we caught early enough that I didn't need to be hospitalized). Every time the medical staff is just so amazed by me. I think I mentioned before how they are more scared than I am. I think if they could put me in a bubble they would (my family and friends probably would too!)

My most recent hospital stay was entertaining for me... everyone wanted to come see the girl with no platelets! I'm not sure what they were picturing but I think they were imagining a zombie or something. Maybe a ghost like version of myself? Either way, I was visited by different nurses, doctors even and the nursing students definitely were curious about me! One kid even said, man I wish I would have known you were here soon because I would have picked to be on your case LOL I felt like I was in my very own episode of Grey's Anatomy. There were so many questions and so many raised eyebrows. They just couldn't understand how my platelets were THAT low and I was sitting before them, carrying on a normal conversation. Guess what guys, I don't know how I'm doing it either!! Much to their surprise, there was nothing fancy about me... I look just like every other person 😉

The thing that got me most on my recent visit was the Charge Nurse had been there 30 years and NEVER seen a patient receive IVIG transfusions or have my condition. Even the pharmacists were given a run for their money as they tried to figure out why I was having side effects, why administering was taking so long and making sure it was being done right. I will say - I received TOP NOTCH care at Modesto Memorial though. Couldn't have asked for a better care team during my stay.

I always try to find jokes and little things to laugh at... I mean, I could be dead and I'm not so I think that gives me the right to poke a little fun at my body! The only thing strong enough to kill me - is myself ;) I also love seeing the surprised faces from the hospital staff when they realize why I'm there and that I'm not in fact dead! LOL
